CHANGELESS MAJESTY

BY

Laura Lee Christian

Distant horizon
level and smooth
unending canyons
shades of red and brown
sprinkled with sunlight
a blue haze
stirring the imagination
rounded gullies
all shapes and sizes
big enough
for the footsteps
of God
sky above seems no bigger
than the earth beneath.
If God were a chiseler of rocks
this could be his playground.
The sunlight changes
each stroke of beauty
as it hits the various sides
of the chiselled rocks.
What made you
oh strong rocks
to be formed into an eternal statue?
What carved your depths
and yet left you standing?
Are you here to remind man
of his humility
in the presence
of the unseen God?
Oh depths of bluish hue,
what are your mysteries?
Tell us your secrets.
How many ages have you seen
and what have you seen
an eternity
or a season of eternity?
If I could walk your jagged edge
without falling
it would be better than a
roller coaster ride.
The joy of sight
to those who have seen you
and the joys of thought
to those who have not.
Do the donkeys know your hiding places
And your creviced paths?
I'm sure they have their favorite walkways
and do they have their favorite times
to walk them, perhaps
when the sun is shining low
and changing the colors of the rocks
into new tones?
Do you get lonely little donkey
or is the Grand Canyon
your changeless friend?
And river below
take your tale
of what you've seen
wherever you go
and let others know
of the changeless majesty.
